What is Pine Bark Mulch and What are its Benefits
Posted By Ervin in Gardening
Mulch is used to insulate the soil and plants in winter. Mulch is an organic matter that benefits the soil and plants. Good organic mulch can control the weeds and erosion of soil. It also helps in retaining soil moisture and prevent splash back of soil. There are so many natural mulches available, but which one is the right one for your soil and plants. Let’s know about Pine Bark Mulch that is suitable for most of the lawns.
1. What is Pine Bark?
Pine bark is made from pine tree’s shredded barks. Even evergreen tree bark is also added to this mulch.
Some of the mulching material is obtained from the pine tree logs, and rest is the small pieces collected by the screening of pine nuggets. These pine nuggets take a long time to break down, to prevent soil erosion.
2. Benefits of Pine Bark
Pine bark stays for a long time in the garden, unlike the other organic mulches. The natural bark of pine stays longer than any other wood in the yard. Other mulches tend to fade to gray after a period, but red, dark brown colored pine bark remains in the garden for a longer time. Compare to other mulches, pine bark is lightweight, and it can be spread quickly in the garden. Organic mulch prepared from pine bark helps in retaining moisture of plants and prevents soil-borne diseases from spreading.
Other Benefits are :
- Keeps the soil moist and moderates soil temperature
- Reduces weeds by preventing seeds from sprouting.
- Gradually decomposes and adds humus to soil giving it a loose and crumbly texture.
- It comes in shredded or nugget form.
3. Different types of Pine Mulches
You can choose the pine mulch depending on the type of plants that you have.
Finely shredded pine, this mulch is tiny, can be used for tightly spaced crops. This type of mulch is applied as layers in crops with new flowers and having tender shoots. By using this tiny sized mulch for the tender shoot, we can prevent soil from getting washed away. Large sizes of Pine barks are also made. The main advantage of large nuggets is that they take more time for decomposing and have more service time. The premium bark is used for plants that grow well in acidic conditions like roses. The premium bark is made by double processing the pine bark of southern pine trees.
Another type of Pine bark is the Border bark. This mulch is in golden brown color. This bark can withstand strong winds. This hammer milled bark does well is areas experiencing a lot of soil erosion. The superfine bark is a hammer milled chocolate brown colored bark, mainly used as topdressing mulch.
