Raised beds are the most productive places that can be designed by you in your garden. Raised beds project is a DIY process, and you can easily build by following the given method.
How To Build a Raised Bed?
You will need just some essential tools and workers to make a raised bed garden in your lawn. Here is the step by step process.
1. Pick the Perfect Place
There should be sufficient sunlight for the plants and veggies to grow well.
Make the ground on the same level to make the installation easy.
2. Choose the Correct Material for the Bed
Untreated rot wood is the most suitable for any bed.
Here are some of the other type of materials that can be used:
Stacked Stone: Most of the gardeners prefer to use stone because it requires less maintenance and also the plants grow healthier in the stone beds. The look of the stone is different when others look at your lawn
Recycled wood: These are eco-conscious bed materials help you to conserve the nature. Redwood is the perfect option for the beds used to raise plants like tomato, squash, eggplant and more veggies.
Woven Wattle: These type of beds form a support to the climbing plants. Made from twigs woven together in a circle shape.
Redwood Box: If you are planting in a patio or balcony, then using redwood box is the best option. The beds look beautiful in your patios and can be easily moved.
3. Determine the Size and the Layout:
The size and design are the crucial aspects in a bed. Do not make the beds more than 4 feet long and keep the depth between 12 and 24 inches. If you are having multiple beds side by side, then see that the gap between them is at least 18 inches.
4. Build the Raised Beds
After getting the required layout, it is time to prepare the bed. If you are using stone, then the bed can be adjusted without using mortar. If wooden pieces are used for making beds, you can secure the wood pieces into the desired shape with the help of screws.
5. Line the Bottom of the Bed
To prevent weed and unwanted grass from growing up into the bed, place corrugated cardboard or newspaper at the bottom.
6. Fill the Beds
It is time to fill the beds with soil. Pick up soil that is the best for the plants you choose. Fill up the beds with one part of the soil, 1 part of manure and 1 part of sand.
7. Plant the Veggies
Digging now will be very easy as the bed is filled with the soil and manure. After the required seeds are planted in the beds, watering can be done according to the plant in the bed.
8. Watering
The beds can be irrigated by hand watering or by using an automated system. Although time-consuming, make it a habit of going for hand watering. You can observe the plants and take action if there are any problems with the beds or plants.
