Common Lawn Diseases in New York
Posted By Ervin in Gardening
Like other states in the United States, lawns in New York are also prone to diseases. Most of these diseases occur in the summer season when there are hot and humid conditions. Due to the attack of diseases, even the healthiest lawns struggle to thrive.
In this article, we discuss the most common lawn diseases in New York and their causes.
1. Dollar Spot
One of the common diseases in most of the lawns. The disease forms a distinct pattern of circular patches that are in the size of a silver dollar. Excessive thatch, moisture, poor drainage facility, overwatering, and lousy soil conditions are the main reasons for the dollar spot disease in lawns.
2. Brown Patch
These patches are mostly found on the edges of the lawn, and one can quickly identify them due to their unusual “smoke rings” appearance. This disease is primarily found in cool seasoned grasses and also in some warm-seasoned grass varieties. The patches may form during the periods of heat and humidity. Poor air circulation, over fertilization, overwatering and lawn compactions can also make the situations in the garden even worse.
3. Red Thread
It is a harmless disease that can occur on some of the lawns. If you find some red threads formed in the yard, understand that the lawn is due for fertilization.
4. Fairy Rings
The fungi forms as dark or partial rings in the lawn. The rings can become the growing place for mushrooms. Fairy rings are difficult to control and digging up the rings and reseeding might reduce the growth of mushrooms. Regular mowing and maintaining a lush green grass in the lawn will also control the fairy rings.
5. Snow Mold
The primary cause for this disease is the prolonged snow cover in the lawns. The damage caused by snow mold is temporary, and the best way to deal with the disease is to keep the lawn dry at most of the times.
6. Powdery Mildew
When you see some white dust covering the blades of the grass, then identify it as the powdery mildew disease. Mostly found in areas of shade and low air movement. The disease cannot cause widespread damage to the lawn, and extended cloudiness conditions can be the primary cause of the disease. Improving the air circulation and sunlight will decrease the effect of the disease.
7. Leaf Spot Disease
Caused by a type of fungus and mostly occurs in the spring season. It is a common bluegrass disease that spreads fastly when there is a lot of lush growth, and there is less chance to harden off. Excess thatch, fertilization, and mowing can further promote this disease. To get rid of the infection it requires lawn care for every 3-4 weeks.
8. Rust
Not a regular disease and not found in most of the years. Generally seen in the lawns where the growth of the grass has slowed down. When the garden is affected by this disease, the grass blades contain yellow-orange or red-orange spots with some rust like powder. When the rust is severe, the grass cannot survive. Rust mostly favors the humid weather and frequent light rains.

The above common lawn diseases in New York can severely affect the growth of turf in your garden. Regular core aeration, overseeding, and fertilization are necessary to prevent them.
